A motorcycle ride through Spiti Valley is probably on the bucket list of many riders from Chennai. But when you look at the distance between Chennai and the Himalayas, planning the trip can feel a little complicated.
Should you ride your own bike all the way from Chennai? Take a flight to Delhi? Reach Chandigarh by train? Or simply rent a motorcycle somewhere closer to Spiti?
The answer is simpler than you might think.
You can fly from Chennai to Chandigarh, travel to Shimla by car or bus, rent a motorcycle there and begin your Spiti Valley adventure directly from the mountains.
There’s no need to spend several days riding through highways and busy cities unless that’s the experience you’re specifically looking for.
At Spiti Riders, we recommend starting your motorcycle journey from Shimla. It’s a beautiful gateway to Kinnaur and Spiti, and you get to enjoy mountain roads right from the beginning.
Here’s how we would suggest planning your entire journey from Chennai.
First, Decide Where Your Spiti Bike Trip Will Begin
Before booking flights or train tickets, decide where you want to collect your motorcycle.
Most travellers coming from Chennai have two practical options: Chandigarh or Shimla.
Chandigarh is easier to reach by air, while Shimla is a more exciting place to begin the actual motorcycle journey.
Our suggestion is to use Chandigarh as your arrival point and Shimla as your riding starting point.
Your journey would look something like this:
Chennai → Chandigarh (Flight) → Shimla (Taxi/Bus) → Kinnaur → Spiti Valley (Motorcycle)
This way, you can spend less time on ordinary highways and more time enjoying the beautiful Himalayan roads.
Of course, if you enjoy longer motorcycle journeys and want to start from Chandigarh itself, that’s also possible.
But for riders coming all the way from South India, beginning in Shimla often makes the overall experience more comfortable.
The Easiest Way to Travel from Chennai to Chandigarh
If you’re trying to make the most of your holidays, taking a flight is usually the best option.
Take a Direct Flight from Chennai to Chandigarh
Chennai International Airport (MAA) has direct IndiGo flight services to Chandigarh Airport (IXC), with a flying time of approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes.
That makes Chandigarh a convenient gateway for your Spiti Valley motorcycle trip.
Rather than spending a day travelling through Delhi and then continuing towards Himachal Pradesh, you can land much closer to Shimla.
However, flight timings and availability can change, so check the schedule before confirming your tour dates.
Here’s one important thing we recommend: book your flight according to your arrival time, not just the cheapest fare.
If you land in Chandigarh during the afternoon, you may have enough time to travel to Shimla on the same day.
If your flight arrives late in the evening, staying overnight in Chandigarh and heading to Shimla the following morning may be more comfortable.
After all, you are coming for an adventure. There’s no reason to start it feeling exhausted.
What About Flying from Chennai to Delhi?
Delhi is another option, especially if you find better flight prices or a more suitable connection.
From Delhi, you can travel to Shimla by Volvo bus or private taxi. You could also continue towards Chandigarh by train.
But remember, Delhi is considerably farther from Shimla than Chandigarh.
If two flights are similarly priced and their schedules are convenient, we’d normally suggest choosing Chandigarh.
It reduces the road journey and gets you closer to the mountains.
Can You Travel from Chennai by Train?
Absolutely.
If you have enough time and enjoy train travel, you can consider travelling towards Chandigarh or Delhi by rail.
The Chennai–Delhi route has established long-distance train connections, while services towards Chandigarh can be checked according to your travel dates.
From Delhi, you can continue to Shimla by bus, taxi or other suitable connections.
The main consideration is time. Long-distance train journeys can take well over a day, so you’ll need to account for that in your overall holiday.
For someone with limited leave who wants to spend maximum time riding in the Himalayas, flying will generally be a more convenient choice.
Chandigarh to Shimla: A Comfortable Start Before the Real Adventure
Once you reach Chandigarh, Shimla is approximately 115–120 kilometres away.
The journey usually takes around 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic, weather and where you’re starting from.
You can choose between a private taxi and a bus. Both are good options.
If you’re travelling with a group of friends, a private cab may be more convenient. You can share the cost, travel together with your luggage and get dropped directly at your hotel.
If you’re travelling solo, a bus can be a more economical option. HRTC operates services between Chandigarh and Shimla, and you can check timings through its official booking website.
The road journey itself is enjoyable.
As you leave Chandigarh and enter Himachal Pradesh, the scenery begins to change. You’ll travel through the hills around Parwanoo and Solan before continuing towards Shimla.
The air gets cooler, the roads become more winding, and you’ll start seeing the mountain landscape you came to experience.
By the time you reach Shimla, the trip already feels different from an ordinary holiday.
Our suggestion is to stay in Shimla for the night, enjoy a relaxed evening and begin your motorcycle journey the following morning.
Why Start Your Spiti Bike Trip from Shimla Instead of Chandigarh?
This is one of the most common decisions riders have to make.
Both Chandigarh and Shimla are suitable starting points, but they offer different experiences.
Starting from Chandigarh means covering the entire journey into Himachal Pradesh on your motorcycle. This works well if you have extra time and enjoy long-distance highway riding.
Starting from Shimla means you’re already in the mountains.
And for someone travelling all the way from Chennai, that’s a major advantage.
You Avoid the Hotter Plains
Chandigarh and the surrounding region can be quite hot during the summer.
Riding in a motorcycle jacket, boots, gloves and a full-face helmet through city traffic and warm highways can be tiring.
By travelling to Shimla in a car or bus, you avoid that part of the ride and save your energy for the mountains.
The Ride Becomes Beautiful Almost Immediately
Imagine collecting your Himalayan motorcycle in Shimla in the morning.
You check the bike, secure your luggage, put on your riding gear and start towards Narkanda.
Instead of city traffic, you have winding mountain roads, forests and beautiful Himalayan views ahead.
This is the kind of experience most riders dream about when planning a Spiti trip.
You Enter Spiti Through Kinnaur
Another reason we prefer Shimla is the route itself.
The journey through Narkanda, Rampur, Sangla, Kalpa, Nako and Tabo allows you to experience the gradual transformation of the Himalayas.
You’ll begin with green mountains and forested roads, continue through the impressive valleys of Kinnaur and eventually reach the dry, rugged landscape of Spiti.
It’s not just a way to reach Kaza.
The journey through Kinnaur is one of the highlights of the entire motorcycle expedition.
It also allows for a more gradual gain in altitude when your itinerary includes suitable overnight stops, though riders should still take proper precautions against altitude sickness.
Your First Riding Day: Leaving Shimla Behind
One of the best things about starting from Shimla is that the adventure begins naturally.
You don’t have to wait for several hundred kilometres before the scenery becomes interesting.
As you ride towards Narkanda, you’ll pass forested hills, mountain villages and beautiful viewpoints.
Further ahead, the route towards Rampur begins following the Sutlej River, with mountain slopes rising on either side.
Eventually, you enter Kinnaur, where the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic.
The roads here can be narrow in places, and conditions vary depending on weather and road maintenance.
That’s part of why it’s important to plan sensible daily distances.
You’ll want enough time to stop for photographs, enjoy a cup of tea with mountain views and appreciate the journey instead of constantly checking how many kilometres are left.
From Kinnaur to Spiti: Where the Landscape Completely Changes

One of the things that makes a Spiti motorcycle trip memorable is how different the scenery becomes as you ride farther.
In Kinnaur, you may explore places like Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa, depending on your chosen itinerary.
Sangla offers beautiful valley scenery, Chitkul is known for its remote mountain setting, and Kalpa has incredible views of the Kinner Kailash range.
As you continue towards Nako and Tabo, the lush green landscape gradually gives way to Spiti’s rugged mountain terrain.
The mountains become drier. The villages become more remote. The roads begin to feel more adventurous.
Then you reach Kaza, the main town of Spiti Valley.
From Kaza, you can explore famous destinations such as Key Monastery, Kibber, Chicham Bridge, Langza, Hikkim and Komic.
And if you’re travelling during a period when the Manali route is open and road conditions are safe, your itinerary may also include Chandratal Lake and Kunzum Pass.
For riders coming from Chennai, it’s an incredible contrast — from a busy coastal city to some of the most remote high-altitude landscapes in India.
How Much Time Should You Keep for the Entire Trip?
Here’s where we suggest planning carefully.
Many travellers book an 8-day Spiti bike tour without considering the time needed to reach Shimla from Chennai.
If your motorcycle expedition starts and ends in Shimla, you’ll need time for the flight, transfer and return journey.
For example, if you’re planning an 8-day motorcycle tour, your overall holiday could look like this:
| Day | Your travel plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Fly from Chennai to Chandigarh and travel to Shimla if timing permits |
| Day 2 | Begin your motorcycle expedition from Shimla |
| Days 3–8 | Explore Kinnaur and Spiti following the planned route |
| Day 9 | Complete your 8-day motorcycle tour and return to Shimla |
| Day 10 | Travel to Chandigarh and fly back to Chennai if schedules allow |
This is a possible 10-day plan, provided your flight schedules line up well.
If you arrive late in Chandigarh or want some extra time for weather-related delays, keeping an additional day is a sensible decision.
Our advice is simple: don’t book your return flight so tightly that a small road delay could disrupt your entire journey.
Himalayan road travel needs a little flexibility.
Which Bike Should You Rent for Your Spiti Adventure?

You don’t need to bring your own motorcycle from Chennai.
One of the easiest options is to rent a suitable adventure bike in Shimla and return it at the agreed pickup or drop-off location.
At Spiti Riders, we provide motorcycles for Spiti Valley and other Himalayan routes.
If you’re deciding between models, here are a few useful considerations.
Royal Enfield Himalayan 411: A practical option for riders who prefer a familiar adventure motorcycle with comfortable touring ergonomics.
Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: Worth considering if you want stronger performance, particularly when carrying luggage or covering longer mountain stretches.
Royal Enfield Scram 440: A versatile motorcycle for riders who want a balance between road comfort and mixed-terrain capability.
Don’t choose a motorcycle simply because it looks impressive in photographs.
Think about your height, riding experience, comfort level, luggage and whether you’re travelling solo or with a pillion.
If you’re unsure, share your riding experience with our team before booking.
A Small Tip Before Collecting Your Motorcycle
Ask about the rental terms before arriving in Shimla.
Confirm the security deposit, included accessories, fuel policy, luggage arrangement, required documents and return location.
If you’re planning to finish your trip in Manali instead of Shimla, confirm whether a separate motorcycle drop charge applies.
And before starting your journey, take a short test ride.
It’s better to discover that you need to adjust your luggage or riding position in Shimla than halfway through a difficult mountain section.
Should You Join a Group Tour or Explore Spiti on Your Own?
This really depends on what kind of rider you are.
Some people enjoy travelling independently. They like choosing their own hotels, deciding where to stop and riding at their own pace.
If you’re comfortable with mountain roads and organising travel in remote regions, renting a bike and planning your own route can be rewarding.
But if this is your first Himalayan motorcycle expedition, joining a group tour may be a better choice.
With a supported Spiti motorcycle tour, you travel along a planned route with other riders.
Depending on the package, arrangements may include accommodation, a road captain, mechanical support and a backup vehicle.
This is particularly convenient when you’re travelling from Chennai because you can coordinate your arrival in Shimla with a scheduled departure.
You also get to share the experience with other motorcycle enthusiasts.
By the end of a long Spiti expedition, the people you rode with often become one of the best parts of the trip.

A Few Things We’d Tell Every Rider Coming from Chennai
Before you pack your bags, there are a few details worth considering.
Don’t underestimate the cold. Even when you’re travelling during the regular motorcycle touring season, early mornings, evenings and high mountain passes can be cold. Carry thermal layers and appropriate protective riding gear.
Bring a proper motorcycle licence. A valid licence permitting you to ride a motorcycle is required for rental. Also carry government-issued identification and confirm any additional documentation in advance.
Make room for altitude adjustment. Spiti is at a much higher elevation than Chennai. Don’t rush into strenuous activity immediately after arriving at higher altitudes, and take symptoms of altitude sickness seriously.
Keep luggage manageable. If you’re travelling by flight, check baggage allowances for helmets and protective gear. On the motorcycle, secure your luggage properly rather than carrying too much weight.
Don’t plan mountain roads like city highways. Riding 100 kilometres in the Himalayas can take much longer than riding the same distance around Chennai. Allow time for breaks, road conditions and unexpected delays.
Check the route before departure. Roads such as Kunzum Pass and the Chandratal approach are seasonal. Your plan should always follow current local road conditions.
Most importantly, come with the right mindset.
Spiti isn’t about riding as fast as possible or covering the maximum number of destinations.
It’s about enjoying a part of the Himalayas that feels completely different from everyday life.
Planning a Spiti Trip from Chennai? Here’s Our Recommendation
If we were helping a group of riders from Chennai plan their first Spiti expedition, this is the arrangement we’d suggest:
Book a suitable flight to Chandigarh. A direct flight is preferable when it fits your schedule.
Travel to Shimla by car or bus. Both options are practical, so choose according to your arrival time, luggage and group size.
Stay overnight in Shimla. Meet the team, check your motorcycle and prepare for the ride.
Start the expedition from Shimla. Follow the scenic route through Kinnaur towards Spiti, with overnight stops that suit the conditions and your riding experience.
Keep enough time for the return. If you’ve planned an 8-day motorcycle tour, allow additional travel time for the complete Chennai-to-Chennai journey.
That’s it.
You don’t need to complicate the trip or spend several days bringing a motorcycle from Chennai unless you specifically want a cross-country road adventure.
A little advance planning can help you spend more of your holiday where it really matters — riding through the Himalayas.
