Chandratal Lake December Accessibility: Can You Visit Chandratal in Winter?
Chandratal Lake in December is not accessible to regular tourists.
By December, heavy snowfall covers the roads around Kunzum Pass, Batal and Chandratal, the seasonal camps have closed, temperatures remain far below freezing and the lake itself freezes during winter.
So, if you’re planning a Spiti Valley trip in December, you can still experience the spectacular winter landscapes of Spiti—but Chandratal Lake should not be included in your itinerary.
Here’s what you need to know before planning your journey.
Is Chandratal Lake Open in December?
No. Chandratal Lake is normally inaccessible in December.
Chandratal lies at an altitude of around 14,000 feet in the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The district administration confirms that the lake freezes during the winter season.
Reaching Chandratal depends on the high-altitude road network around Batal and Kunzum Pass.
This route becomes snowbound during winter.
According to the Lahaul & Spiti district administration, the Keylong–Kaza route across Kunzum Pass can remain closed for more than nine months, generally from around October–November until June–July, because of heavy snowfall.
December therefore falls well inside the normal winter closure period.
Why Is Chandratal Inaccessible in December?
Chandratal isn’t simply difficult to reach in December—the entire surrounding region changes once winter arrives.
1. Kunzum Pass Closes Due to Snow
Kunzum Pass connects the Spiti side with Batal and Lahaul.
Heavy snowfall makes the route unsuitable for normal traffic during winter.
Without this road connection, reaching Chandratal by vehicle is not practical.
2. The Batal–Chandratal Road Gets Buried
The final road towards Chandratal is already rough even during summer.
In December, snow can completely cover this section.
There is no regular winter road-clearing operation designed to provide tourist access to Chandratal.
3. Chandratal Lake Freezes
The district administration notes that Chandratal freezes during winter.
Instead of the famous blue water seen during summer, the entire landscape becomes a high-altitude snow zone.
4. Camps Close for the Season
Accommodation around Chandratal is seasonal.
The tented camps operating in the broader Chandratal area close before deep winter arrives.
In December, travellers should not expect:
- Camps
- Restaurants
- Food facilities
- Regular vehicles
- Tourist infrastructure
- Easy emergency assistance
This is one of the biggest reasons attempting to reach the lake independently is unsafe.
Can You Reach Chandratal from Manali in December?
No.
The summer route generally follows:
Manali → Atal Tunnel → Gramphu → Chhatru → Batal → Chandratal
While the Atal Tunnel provides year-round access towards parts of Lahaul, it does not make Chandratal a year-round destination.
Beyond Gramphu, the route towards Batal and Kunzum enters much harsher high-altitude terrain.
By December, heavy snowfall normally cuts off this road.
Can You Reach Chandratal from Kaza in December?
You cannot normally reach Chandratal from Kaza either.
During summer, the route is:
Kaza → Losar → Kunzum Pass → Batal → Chandratal
But Kunzum Pass closes during winter because of snow.
The district administration states that the route connecting Kaza and Keylong across Kunzum remains closed for much of the year because of heavy snowfall.
So even if you successfully reach Kaza in December, you should not plan to continue towards Chandratal.
Can You Trek to Chandratal in December?
For ordinary travellers, this should not be considered a winter trekking option.
The summer road disappearing under snow does not turn it into a normal trekking trail.
Winter conditions can include:
- Deep snow
- Extreme sub-zero temperatures
- Avalanches
- Hidden road edges
- Frozen streams
- Rapid weather changes
- No accommodation
- Very limited communication
- Difficult rescue access
Fitness alone is not enough to make such an attempt safe.
Chandratal in December should be treated as a remote winter expedition environment, not a tourist trek.
Can You Still Visit Spiti Valley in December?
Yes—and this is the better option.
While Chandratal and the Kunzum route shut down, winter Spiti can generally be approached from the Shimla–Kinnaur side, subject to weather and road conditions.
A typical winter route is:
Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza
The district administration describes the Shimla-side road towards Kaza as the route that remains accessible for much more of the year compared with the Kunzum route.
However, winter travel remains weather-dependent. Fresh snowfall, black ice, rockfall or temporary road closures can still affect the journey.
What Can You Visit in Spiti Instead of Chandratal?
December offers a completely different version of Spiti Valley.
Depending on current road conditions, you can explore places such as:
Kaza
The main base for a winter Spiti journey.
Key Monastery
Seeing Key surrounded by snow is completely different from visiting during summer.
Kibber
A spectacular high-altitude village that becomes a white Himalayan landscape during winter.
Chicham
Another beautiful area to explore when local roads remain operational.
Langza
The giant Buddha overlooking snow-covered mountains makes Langza particularly beautiful in winter.
Hikkim & Komic
Access depends on snow and local road conditions, so confirm before leaving Kaza.
Tabo Monastery
One of the most important cultural experiences on the winter route into Spiti.
When Does Chandratal Usually Become Accessible?
There is no fixed annual opening date.
Snowfall and snow-clearance work decide when the road opens.
In many years, travellers begin reaching Chandratal around June, after Kunzum Pass and the connecting roads have been cleared.
The main practical travel season is generally:
June → September
Early October may also be possible in some years, but conditions become increasingly unpredictable as winter approaches.
Never plan a Chandratal trip purely according to calendar dates.
Always check the current road status before travelling.
Best Time to Visit Chandratal Lake
If Chandratal is one of the main reasons for your Spiti trip, consider travelling between June and September.
June
Snow remains visible on the surrounding mountains and the landscape feels fresh after winter.
July & August
The lake and surrounding landscape are at their most vibrant, although road conditions should still be monitored.
September
One of our favourite months for Chandratal because of clearer skies, beautiful landscapes and generally fewer travellers compared with peak summer.
October
Possible only while the roads remain open. Early snowfall can change plans quickly.
November to May
Do not assume tourist road access to Chandratal.
